I recently was forced to pass on the shoulder, and had a cop right there to pull me over!

there's a story to it - following a van with no windows in the back (I cannot see traffic in front of him), following at a safe distance for the speed we were driving, never knew he was approaching a stopped car waiting to make a left-hand turn when he swerved onto the shoulder at the last moment, leaving me ready to plow into the stopped vehicle, or if I slam on my brakes and hopefully stop before whacking that car, I'm rear-ended by the moving van behind me.

And of course the jerk who cause this got away clean, while I was left to deal with the cop.


Good to see the guy in the opening video got what was coming to him!

That situation is legal here in Texas. Shoulders can be used to pass in certain situations.

if you aren't sure you could stop in time, then you obviously were NOT following at a safe distance
 
You can tell that video was converted from Beta Max to VHS and then to digital, that's just how old it is. It's interesting how the conversion process slowed it down, but it may be that particular VCR was set incorrectly.

What that driver got was well deserved though. I can't stand drivers who are in a hurry and think they're more important. They should have left 10 minutes early if they're that much in a hurry to get to wherever they are going.

Safe driving distance is ~2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. Stopping time from 50mph is about 2 seconds if you slam on your brakes as hard as you can, which can send your car out of control even in dry conditions. Would you take that chance of stopping in time if the situation immediately presented itself and you had a mere instant to decide what to do?

I wouldn't chance it at 4 seconds behind.
