when i try to run the game it says "please make sure the Diablo II play disk is in the CD drive". I've tried all three disks. Would a bad cd-key entered during installation cause this?
 
If your game is genuine then it should not have any problems unless if it has a defect on it which is very rare but sometimes slips throught the quality control net. Or the other reason is that it is a copied CD and then you will need to do a full install and then from the interent download a crack to fool the game that there is a CD in the drive.
