edit: either forgot or never learned that the size for X includes the mapped physical memory on the video card. The RSS is only about 17MB, like it should be.
Well, I haven't been doing much in X for a while, and memory's never been a big concern with 512MB in the box. But I looked at top to check out the footprint for a new GNOME installation and it reported 80+MB memory usage for X (alone, not including WM's, GNOME, etc.) Only about 3MB were shared. Somebody please tell me it's not supposed to be like this, and preferably also explain how to fix it. I'm running XFree 4.1.0 on Slackware 8, with the 2.4.16 kernel and a Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO.
