Never Mind -- Prob Fixed

Hey, All,

I just build a new rig out of a collection of extra parts I had. Components: P3 (1GHZ), an Intel D815EEA2 motherboard, 512 of new Kingston RAM, a Western Digital HD (brand new), Sony CD-RW & floppy, all in an adequate Enermax case w/PSU.

I physically put everything together and installed W2KPro on the new HD. Everything went off without a hitch. I also installed a Zone Alarm Pro firewall.

Prob is, I can't get on the Web. When I try to launch Internet Explorer, the Internet Connection Wizard comes up. Unfortunately, it offers 3 choices, none of which apply to me. :| One is to sign up for a new Internet account via a phone line & modem. The second is to transfer an existing Internet account for use via dial-up. The third is for a "manual" set-up or to connect thru a LAN.

None of these apply to me 'cuz I want to connect directly to the Web via my existing Comcast broadband (cable) connection. The Ethernet cable from the modem is plugged directly into the RJ45 jack on the Intel mobo. The green light comes on in the port, so it appears to be working. (Since I haven't been able to access the Web yet, I obviously haven't been able to download the INF files or mobo drivers, let alone Windows updates, etc.)

I called Comcast and they said I should just be able to plug the modem into this new computer and be off & running. They were obviously mistaken. Any suggestions on how I should handle the Internet Connection Wizard, or any other suggestions here? This is very frustrating. :frown:

Thanks, PurdueRy. I figured out the problem: I didn't have a CD with the drivers for this Intel motherboard that I used (it was a gift). I was gonna get 'em off of Intel's Web site, but of course I couldn't get online to do it. Anywho, I guess because the mobo drivers weren't installed, Windows apparently didn't recognize the Ethernet port. (Device Manager showed no network adapters, so once I saw that, I knew what the prob was.) Even though the cable modem & Ethernet cable were plugged in, the computer wasn't 'seeing' the connection.

I had to install a NIC into a PCI slot, then power down my cable modem, plug the Ethernet cable in, then power the modem back up. I then restarted the computer, and the modem then recognized the connection. I'm now online. 🙂

I'm now off to download a bunch of Windows Updates, INF files, mobo drivers and other necessities. 😛
