never mind overclocking, how about 'quiet' PC's ?

lately, this is the question on my mind. how does one go about make the pc more quiet, and less of that droning noise from the power supply for instance ? the iMac's have much quieter operation and it does help one to concentrate I find. any thoughts ?

Cover your ears? Nah.. well check to see what fans are needed and what arent.. check the CPU temp.. clean the fans.. they can get rather dirty and noisy.

If you have a standard configured system like Compaq', Dell's and the likes the only noise should be from the PSU, and a little from the HD. The trick is to set the CPU as far away from you as possible and if possible on the floor with carpet underneath. If you have extra fans on your system (home built) you can always reduce the speed of the fan either with a rheostat or by re-connecting the fan with 7 volts (red and yellow). I've got 7 fans on my mine but I hardly hear it.

I'm also getting sick of my loud pc. I took some steps to quiet it and posted what I did on the BBS. Nothing as crazy as that what he did but my stuff was really easy and took no time at all. The computer is much quieter but I'm cursed with this Quantum Fireball LM.. this thing has such a loud high pitch wine that no matter how quiet my fans are all I hear is the HD. I even took some steps to quiet it that helped but it's still so loud.
