Never let your friends know that you know about computers!

Here I sit on the phone with one of my friends trying to help him get his damn computer working after he decided to screw it up. Meanwhile I'm trying to do homework, I wasn't aware the "Ted's house of tech support" line was open.

This is after I spent three hours at his house last week helping him install a bunch of stuff on his computer. Arggggggg!!! I hate this! Why must friends who don't know any about computers try to upgrade stuff themselves? They only screw it up. I wish all my friends would buy Dells so I didn't have to be their personal tech support technician.

I built a computer for my sister. Knows nothing about computers. But I gave her rules for contacting me with questions on the computer. Also, I don't just tell her how to fix it, I teach her to diagnose the same problem in the future and fix it herself. Makes my life easier. I am getting ready to build one for one of my other sisters.

Being everyone's tech support isn't very fun until your female friends start calling for help ;)

flippinfleck: That's a good idea, but telling them how to fix it in the future doesn't help when they decide to go out and buy and new CPU, motherboard, and video card, and then call you when they can't get the stuff to work.

I definitly agree, it was cool when I was younger, because I could show everyone how much I knew, but no one would trust me with their comp, I always thought that was a bad thing :Q

I agree! I've spent hours on the phone with friends & family alike, trying to sort their problems out.

I don't mind lending a hand. I remember one time when I always bugged my friends that knew about computers. I know enough now so I can handle most problems....

I finally got off the phone with him, luckily he had to go to one of his cop training classes, so I got off early. I told him to just reformat and reinstall Windows. Luckily I had set him up with partitions a while back, so he won't lose the data from his programs. The guy bought a new motherboard, cpu, and video card. I would always reformat/reinstall after buying all that stuff, he wanted an easy way out. ;)

I don't know about the rest of the guys, but generally I don't mind if a hot female friend asks me to with her computer. Damsel in distress kind of thing I guess?

The best thing is when a high school teacher says "I'm at my wit's end with this stupid machine!"...
The school provides the teachers with these OLD Compaq desktops that are painfully slow and crash about every 5 minutes.
It's great when the teacher asks who knows computers, you volunteer, fix the problem, and they offer extra credit ;)

I learned years ago to ALWAYS charge a token amount for helping friends or family. They'll appreciate what you've done more and perhaps take more "care" in what they do on the computer. Might sound harsh but I've never had a complaint.
