------Never had a cell phone... Can I buy a 'used' one...??

thatsright

I'm thinking of going with Sprint PCS here in the Boston Area. But I don't want to be locked into a contract, so I want to buy the phone outright, first.

The guy in the store said if I buy a 'used' older Sprint PCS I could use that with a plan. But he said it has to be 'clean' phone. No idea what that means.

Thanks guys. Suggestions/links/tips please!

usually all providers won't let you get a plan without signing a contract.

I'm pretty sure I don't want to do the pre-paid route. Just looking for a flexible plan I can drop if need me as I might move to FL soon. I guess the only way I can have flexibility is by buying the phone.

don't buy Sprint used phone....Sprint link their accounts to the phone serial or IEMI numbers (which you need to activate)

if their is a overdue balance attached to the phone, you will not able to use the phone until you pay off the account (even tho its not urs)

if you plan to go with used phone, stick with GSM(tmo, cingular) or Nextel, because they use sim card, even if its a stolen phone, you will able to use the company's sim card and activate it.

PM me for further question

If you go with a nationwide plan (eg Cingular), you have free long distance and no roaming anyway..so it wouldn't matter if you moved -- it'd just be a long distance number for other people to call you. 😛

Try Verizon for the Boston area. I had Sprint when lworking in Boston. I was working just north of the city and it was a PITA finding a good signal. I switched over to V and was very happy.

If you look hard enough, there are money back phone deals with Cingular and Tmobile that would greatly subsidize a one year commitment. I'd imagine those services would be decent in a city like Boston.
