dang, bought a 256mb of pny ram. It was retail. had 256mb on the box and the sticker on the ram said 256. on both computers it came up as 128mb. cant return it. dont make the same mistake. never buy from PNY:|

What was it? PC133 RAM? the newer, higher-density PC133 sticks sometimes won't work in an older board, if that's what you were trying to do. That may be why it was only detected as 128. Or it might be at least partially DOA. Take it back and tell them it didn't work. The least the store should do is swap it for another stick. Surely they aren't going to stick you w/ a dead part.

This goes for anything you buy. Nobody is perfect, I'm sure of that. Also, I've never had any problems with PNY memory.

i agree dowfen, not everyone will enjoy the good benefits of a product or service. there will always be those with bad experiences.

Must be high density sticks. High density sticks detect as 128mb (if using a 256 stick) in older boards (such as many pentium 2/3 boards, etc.)

Hmmm, I'm guessing he can't return it b/c there was a rebate involved and he cut the box up maybe?

Which board in your rig was it? One seems to be SDR and the other seems to be DDR. On older Intel PC100 BX boards, I don't think double-sided dimms with high density modules were supported. If you were trying to use the memory in that Abit-BM6, that might be the case. Total shot in the dark, but I'm pretty sure that was the case (although my BX-based BE6-II has no probs with 256MB dimms).

I just got some cheap Frys memory (256 meg, never again) and it was regognized as 1 gig on some boxes, and 16 meg on the box i wanted it for. The motherboard (Abit AB PX5) only supports dimms up to 128 meg per bank. I vote with CXhiz that your motherboard just can't handle it

i dont think PNY makes anything. i'm pretty sure their ram sticks are Samsung,Infineon,Exilir,etc...

As far as i remember, MSI makes video cards for PNY. This was a while ago tho.

Yep, PNY's just a retail redistributor, almost like a hardware commodity dealer. They buy bulk from whoever is selling the cheapest that meets the product advertised on their box. Their RAM is a mixed bag of whatever they have on hand; there was a time when PC2100 supply was low, but PC2700 was high, so PNY just packaged PC2700 in PC2100 boxes to meet demands.

Lately, its been their GeForce 4 cards. People were getting 128MB GF4's with faster RAM in 64MB boxes simply b/c mfgs. shifted production to 128MB cards with faster rated RAM. MSI is their biggest supplier, but to meet demand, people often found rebadged Albatrons as well.

I like to think of them as the "Sathers of Retail Computer Peripherals", kind of a grab bag of goodies that could be better or could be worse than what you expected. 😀
