My D-Link 614+ works AWSOME installs EASY!! as long as you disable the 4X speed thing if you don't have a D-link wifi card. My friend who has this linksys router not sure which verision I can't ever connect to he has trouble too.

I recently bought this router, after reading all those threads and seeing the horror stories that people have had. The funny thing is, it works flawlessly for me, yes the V4 is working fine for me right out of the box.

On the other hand, before that router we had the Netgear WGT624, and that router was nothing but problems. It would work, not work, work for one person, etc. It was absolute crap. The firewall wouldn't configure right, it would slow to a crawl after under one hour of activity, and their tech support was utterly useless.

So what have I learned? Nothing. I don't think there is any hardware that is more fickle than routers, as every single manufacturer has people who swear by them and against them.

This question may be more fit for highly technical, but why are routers so vulnerable to total collapse?

You're asking the wrong guy 🙂. But, as for any computer equipment, I imagine part of it is conflicts, part of it is the manufacturer's fault via bad firmware or design, and the other part user error.

Have you tried contacting Linksys tech support? What were the problems you were having with your router?

word... and that damned 4x thing pissed me off to no end until i realized what was causing the problem.

Interesting.

I had a disconnect problem too for the longest time. I had my cable modem replaced which didn't solve the problem. Then I changed my ethernet cables which didn't help either. Finally this weekend I changed my Kingston NIC to a Netgear NIC and my router seems to work fine now.

I'm not sure if its my Linksys BEFW11S4 router though.

Its all voodoo I tell you. But I for one will think twice about wireless now.. bleh...

If this is such a common problem, is there any way to hold the company accountable for it?
Maybe a BBB complaint?

same here.

I had a v2.4 and now the v4

The problem with the resets and hangs is the 802 authentication setting....it needs to be off. I don't know why but with it on as soon as my wife joined the wireless network it would freeze and we'd have to reboot everything.

Microsoft has a knowledgebase article about 802 authentication and wireless...now I go days without incident.

Fact is almost any consumer line of routers/waps/switches seems to have issues for many.
