Never built HTPC before, need some advice

Hey guys, im looking to build a blu-ray capable HTPC for my entertainment center. I have built several systems before, but never HTPC. I would like some advice on either what to read or where to look. I confused as far as what OS and apps to run, I have heard of some linux based systems that are made for being HTPC and running TV capture and all the bells and whistles. I have no clue really what its capable of, and I want to build a system. Any advice is appreciated. thanks.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Blu-ray/DVD playback as well as other streaming video. I maybe interested in TV capture/DVR etc, im not sure if it would really offer anything over our current DVR box?

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

Id like to keep it 1k-1.2k

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

no preference here

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Dont have any current parts, completely from scratch.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

searched a bit read some threads here and there.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

default or OC doesnt matter to me, my current system is overclocked.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
In the next 2-3 months I plan to start building this system.

Also how do you control HTPC's, just wireless keyboard and mouse or do they have some fancy remotes or something? Thanks.
