So it probably has much more to do with the ppl they hire, but they need to reconsider their hiring process. I used to live in the NE of Philly and there's a walmart there by the mall. Very nice and friendly ppl and you never have to wait that long in line.

So, I now live in S Philly and I stopped by the walmart there to pick up some rock salt. I usually favor target because it's much cleaner in the aisles and the people are so friendly and helpful. Anyways, I'm strolling through one of the departments (I think it was the kitchen dept or something) and this lady asked a sales associate where something was. All I heard was "does this look like the home and lawn dept?!" or something like that. The lady turned away in disgust and the sales associate said something like she should throw the box she was holding at her.

So I was like whatever maybe the custmer was rude or something. Then, I went to checkout in the express lane. 12 items or less. Well it should read 2 minutes or less to check out. This girl prob like 18 or 19 took her time to complain that she didnt get a break yet. While she's scanning the lady in front of me's items she calls a manager over and tells him she's overdue for a break. he tells her to finish up and she gets mad. He tells her to watchout cuz he's the manager.

Gosh, never again will I visit that walmart

If you hyphenate it, it's actually grammatically sound.

[/i]e.g. While she's scanning the lady-in-front-of-me's items...[/i]

I think it's dumb to come to that conclusion due to the actions of a few. I also think that it's very likely that you could have showed up at the wrong time and taken someone's words out of context. Hey, it's possible.

I'm a Target shopper myself.

It's ALL wally-worlds. I went to one yesterday, got in the "express" line with 4 items. There were two ladies in front of me. The first one has two of the same item - the clerk rings it up, then the lady starts b!tching about the price, so the 300+ lb. manager has to come over and do a price check. Luckily the shelf with the items was only about 20 feet away - still took her about 5 minutes to waddle over there & back. So the clerk changes the price, then the dumba$$ customer can't figure out how to use her fvcking credit card - stood there for another 5 minutes trying to figure out how to slide her card through the reader & sign on the screen... Then the clerk has to stand there & BS with the next lady for another 5 minutes.

All this time, at the next line over, there's this white trash guy telling the clerk how much he hates Christmas shopping & sometimes he just wants to "put a bullet in the heads" of everybody else in the store!

Cliff's notes: Wal-Mart sucks!!

Somebody should have reported her to the manager. The walmart close to me (I avoid and I try to go to the newer one which is about 10 miles further) is an older dingy one and one day I was returning something and a young guy comes in and immediately heads over to customer service and asks to speak to a manager and he just goes on for a while about how the service at this particular walmart has been getting worse and worse lately and he just can't stomach it anymore and he had to say something about it.

You are flipping out because an employee was rude and a young girl was pissed about her break? And.....? Did the store manager slash your tires or something?

1. You don't know the whole story about the first guy.
2. So the girl at the checkout was whining. Is that any different than any other 16 year old girl? Maybe they both got fired that night.

3. WAL-MART ROCKS AND IS TEH BESTEST ST0RE EVAR! CAN I GET A SQUIGGLY?!?!?!?

:D

1. Doesn't excuse her behavior or her attitude.
2. Maybe so but again, part of her job is to be courteous. Hopefully, they did get fired but unfortunately I doubt it.

I rarely shop at walmart these days. The stores are crap and the prices aren't really that cheap compared to other stores.

My Walmart is an older, dingier one but a goody. They sold me a dead car battery once and took care of me.

I always raise hell to the manager, but some places just don't give a crap. Walmart paid my gas bill for having to drive back up there and gave me a discount on the battery.

actually it sounds like a management problem. Whenever you see a store where all or most of the employees have bad attitudes, its because the management does too. Its the old "stuff" rolls downhill theory.

What if the girl complaining about her break was a minor and was reminding the manager that he was violating child labor laws?

What if the girl had been working for like, 10 hours straight or something?

There is the possibility that she was just being a pain in the ass, but you never know.

I think the only mistake here is that you went to Walmart to begin with ;) I never go there unless they have a specific sale on an item a want, and it's worth braving the white trash and excessive check-out lines.

This is why if you can't get it resolved at the store manager level, escalate to the regional manager. They are crappy because people do not complain and choose to accept it. I will make a wager that lilcam did not speak to a manager.

I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't give a crap about the service from employees at retail stores like that. Maybe it's because I work at a grocery store and know what it's like to deal with selfish bastards that take up 30 mins of my time trying to find the best water to feed to their cat or maybe I just don't care since I know they don't.

I shop at stores because I like the prices. Unless an employee goes out of their way to be rude to me, I really don't care what they do. You're upset because an 18 year old was pissed about her break? What if you were told she was standing there for like 5 hours and didn't get a break yet?

I just don't understand why people get upset over crap like this. How did the employee being rude to one person change the service you received? Maybe the other customer was a jackass to the employee before you overheard the conversation. Did the girl complaining about her break change the prices of the items you purchased? I can understand if she stopped checking items to call the manager (which is possible but hard to tell from your description), but if the manager was just passing by, I wouldn't be phased in the slightest if she complained about being tired.

I'm not saying this directly to lilcam, but just in general. I don't get why people make shopping such a subjective experience and blame it on people who happen to be in the store with them at the time. *shrug* I guess I'm just not too picky.

I was at walmart yesterday where the Customer Service is non existent. I was looking to buy a tray stand that i needed for last nights dinner and there were a few of them back there in the furniture department but not one of them had a sticker or a sku or ANYTHING on them. Now.. knowing if I went and got in line with the stand I would hold up everyone else so I asked for help in that department and NO ONE came even after 15 minutes. So I finally just grabbed the tray and went to the check out. I kindly told the lady that it didnt have a sticker or anything on it and that I waited back there for a long time. So she picks up the phone and pages someone from furniture a total of 4 TIMES, 10 minutes. By this time the line is like super duper long. And she proceeds to void my transaction, push me aside and check everyone else out in the line. While shes doing that I ask her what she needs in order to ring out the item and she says I cant do it, it's against company policy/procedure something like that. ( I was more than willing to help out) So after she gets everyone checked out in her lane she runs to the furniture department and then I wait another 10 minutes for her to come back! Total time there 35 minutes. Total items purchased 2 (the tray and then while waiting forever I bought a pack of gum at the checkout)

Ya - I stopped shopping at Walmart years ago.

Me waiting in line to return a crappy 19" TV that was a "hot deal".

Me notices lady in front of me is trying to return an OPEN PACKAGE OF UNDERWEAR.

Me astonished to find out that the CSR ALLOWED LADY TO RETURN OPEN PACKAGE OF UNDERWEAR.

It didn't happen to me though :) That would have just been something I would have overheard and I would have been like 'meh, no biggie'. It was said to another customer and since I know how idiotic the random people shopping in these stores are, it wouldn't surprise me if they had it coming to them.

Walmart used to pride themselves on being so customer oriented. That used to be their selling point. "How can I help you?" and all that. But the decline in their service is so widespread that the change must have come from the top down. The higher ups simply don't care about service anymore, because they're recording record profits. If it was one walmart here, another there, that'd be one thing. But people complain about Walmart all over the country. It's going to be the next Kmart.

Long live Target!

If they did not make everyone wait then they would only sale half of their impulse items at the checkout, looks like it worked for you :D Most walmarts have assistant managers, look for register's being operated by them (They are dressed differently) also, in defense of the retail industry, it is the holidays, so ~90% of all employees will be ringing out customers ie No more customer service until 2004.

exactly!

one employee still represents the store, so if he/she decides to be an a$$hole about something then I consider walmart liable.

the atmosphere is totally different from the one in the NE

I'd like to see some of you go work retail and see how customers suck. I agree that walmart runs their stores too thin and this cuts down in the cs. I'm surprised the cashier actually ran back and checked the price. There probably was no one working in furniture. If I was running that store, things like that would not happen. Someone around furniture would have taken the call.
