I contributed to the pros/cons of living in AZ but I am really interested in the pros/cons of living in Nevada.

Some pros that come to mind:
no state income tax
booming economy in the Las Vegas area
one day's drive to the Pacific
half-day drive to skiing

Cons:
desert, desert, desert

Any NV residents here on ATOT?

Well I'd imagine it would get really hot and really cold in the Las Vegas area since it's still technically part of the desert. You're right about the job boom in the Las Vegas area and from what I gather, it's not that bad living there although real estate is slowly rising in that area.

Pros: within a day's drive are some of the best of America's scenery and national parks.

Real-Estate costs have jumped over the past 3-5 years badly.

Much is due to the influence of CA & speculators.

IT work is in demand for certain sections.

Fuel costs is badly affected by Ca.

Fairly cheap air-fare to most places.

Sales Tax is 7%+

Because all food is imported; it seems to be slightly higher.

Traffic is miserable during rush hours - Only 2 main highways in & out with a 3/4 beltway.

CA drivers make Fri afternoon and Sun afternoons miserable.

Low cost meal deals at the casinos 24/7

All you can drink w/ tips if you are cheap

Being in the auto finance business, a big con would be the credit quality of many of the customers, which I'm sure is a direct result of gambling being so prevailant there.
I know someone who used to work for a bank there, and she told me the overall credit worthiness of many Nevadans is attrocious, worse in that location, than their other branches across the USA.

Pro: Your house won't get flooded annually.
Con: You live among highly poisonous creatures.

Any NV residents here on ATOT?

I lived through my HS years in Reno, NV and now I've been in Tucson, AZ for close to 7 years. I will only be able to comment on that comparison.

Reno girls are ugly. You can tell from any Vegas or LA airport hub becasue the peeps coming from or going to Reno are usually more-so unattractive when compared to other cities. If you live in Reno you'll soon discover that a lot of people tend to be 2-5th generation Nevadans and have not left the Reno/Tahoe area. I always joked about the water or imbreeding as the cause but who knows...they are uglier though.

Back in the day, 1997, or so, driving around in Reno was terrific...there was very little traffic even during rush hour but now when I've gone back to visit it has gotten pretty crazy. There are cars everywhere and the roads were not built or designed for the influx of people into the area. Around the time of the .com crash a ton of peeps from Cali flooded the Reno area becasue of the lack of income tax.

Reno tried to build a technology park but it currently still sits pretty empty becasue no major companies have moved into the area. If you are in IT BEWARE I sh!t you not. The only major company there is IGT, which makes slot machines. They usually hire only engineers though. Other companies exist there or at least are in the area like Microsoft Licensing and Amazon but Microsoft's operation is pretty small, only one small building, and Amazon has a distribution center in a nearby town to the east. I believe Dell also has a distribution center near town. All in all, there are no "real" IT jobs. Reno loves the cheap labor to go into the casinos and these packaging/distribution centers and usually don't have a lot of IT jobs available. If you went there you would pretty much be stuck with Utility companies, the local University, or getting lucky with a small company. Back in 2002 I moved back to Reno to try to find an IT job after graduating the first time and there was a baren landscape. If you have a choice between Vegas and Reno pick Vegas just becasue of the job situation. Oh yeah, and there are an illusions of Oceans 11 type of IT infastructure, let me just kill that. I worked in an Casino in their MIS dept and I would not even call it IT...they had old AS/400 mainframes that batch reports were processed on, and all of their casino equipment were all housed onsite but were supported remotely. The most technology you get to touch is a cash register machine. It was, again...very low level. $10/hour.

The good thing about Reno is that it is close to Tahoe so if you like snowboarding, biking, or the outdoors, there is plenty to do and all very close. Personally I think the town is growing too fast and the city is not handling the transition all too well. Also, as mentioned earier in these postings, the house prices skyrocketed up a year or so ago, so housing is super expensive. Getting a descent place in Reno proper and not Sparks or some outlying town is pricy....of course "a good place" is in the eye of the beholder.

So yeah for jobs and girls I would pick Vegas although us Reno people think that the town is a cestpool of crap. Vegas is kinda crappy...reminds me a lot of Phoenix...busy, nasty, and busy.

I can't say much for Tucson in compaison. If you like hot, rock climbing, hiking, and crappy live bands then this place might be for you...but if you don't, like me, then it's not a good location either. I'm currently pondering where to move too also but I can't make up my mind. Good luck though.

I pretty much grew up in Carson City, went to college in Reno, now live in Las Vegas.

I love Nevada, but it's home to me, so I'm biased. It feels weird being anywhere else (I've lived in California, Montana, and Saskatchewan). I'm so used to being able to shop, drink, wash my car, have a swanky meal (or a trashy 99 cent breakfast), work or anything I want at any time, night or day. I'm used to being able to throw my change into a slot machine after I buy a Slurpee. I'm used to having the last Friday in October off for Nevada Day.

I love the outdoors, so, I prefer Northern Nevada. The mountains are gorgeous in the summer and winter, and the sunsets are incredible. Lake Tahoe is my favorite place in the whole world, and that's just a 1/2 hr drive from where I was raised.

I like Vegas because it's still Nevada, but it's freakishly hot here and the people are goofy. There are better jobs here for college grads, so, here I stay. And no, it doesn't get cold here, ever. It gets chilly, but never coat weather, that's why the snow birds come here ;)

well for one me and my family moved here from chicago's violence and chose nevada state blindly without extensive research and data findings but you live and you learn, anyways the cost of living is outstandingly great no state tax returns to pay for which is great and a plus, housing and apartments is cheaper, but depends on "where" you go is key,the highway sytem is ok you going to have your "idiot" drivers (wherever) you go mind you.vons is your dominicks per say and food 4 less is your aldi and albertsons is your jewel if you heard of these stores, fast food places are essential out here as well as gas station on every other corner in nevada why? because you need it you have to have a car out here, because the bus service is ok but be prepared to be late for every job appointment if it's late, and nevada jobs mostly want "experience" only it seems to be the law out here very few employers offer training so if you come out here you better know how to do whatever job or position you sign up for or your in trouble,CDL positions are gold but you need experience also some train, but with school support, auto insurance is the law of the land in nevada,so you better have it or else!,did you know the insurance rates are high here depends on your driving record and driving records are like a credit check out here its vital no matter what! all jobs want you to be a licenced driver out here they want to make sure you can get to work on time effectively.as far as crime stay far away from east vegas and north vegas those are like the southside and west side of chicago, keep your family safe and head west of vegas, but crime is everywhere you go you just have to be careful,i hate the traffic lights, most are a 5 minute long wait(not joking) really ,so plan extra traveling time headed for work or interviews or any important engagements!state assistance is non-shalant they wont help you if your getting unemployment or child support unless your a single mother with kids? your definately in trouble you literatly have to be a bum for them to help you with zero income,so roll the dice and take your chances,it has perks and headaches, but what city doesnt? i moved here 2012 its oct 2 now so im holding out hopefully it will get better, but its summer every day i dont miss the snow though, but when it rains it pours here also. but thats nevada in a nut shell hope it helps your decision

FYI Apple is building out a datacenter there.
