Have anyone used the 20GB version for jogging? Was it too bulky? Did it skip?

Third dollar value is what you save. (i.e. retail-new price)

Looks like a nice deal (well for the 20g). shame I just spent way to much money.

Unfortunately, I bought this thing 3 weeks ago for $400. It works great as an MP3 jukebox that wirelessly transmits to your car's radio. They have an active firmware team that is constantly adding new features as well. I bought this over an ipod because they anounced WMA support in the next firmware revision.

Teekster-

The unit has a 30 day return policy... you can return it and get one at the new price... call customer support, hell they may even just refund you the difference...

The reason for the blowout, is they're about to release a new version. I know it'll have USB 2.0, probably larger storage, smaller, etc.

It's a good deal. I think it's the only player with Ogg Vorbis support. The USB 1.1 port has a good interface chip, it's been tested to be much faster than other USB 1.1 players and about 1/3 the speed of firewire players.

Seems like a cool device. I like that it will transmit to an FM station. USB 1.1 pretty much sinks the deal.

A bit bigger than an iPod, but it does FM transmission to a car/home stereo, and there's a HUGE firmware community, with even an open-source program going on too. Looks cooler/sleeker than an iPod too, IMHO.

Wow, this is quite impressive. They seem to have almost all of the firmware released under a BSD style license, which allows users to make changes to it! A player with open firmware is something I've been looking forward to for a while. The ability to add support for formats like WMA, OGG, and FLAC is invaluable.

I think someone is yanking your crank. USB 1.1 is about 1/8th as fast as the slowest spec'd 1394 speed. Even though no devices really reach the theoretical max rates at any spec'd speed, it would have to be an INCREDIBLY slow 1394 device to not be blowing away USB 1.1 transfer rates. Do you have a link to these devices?

Link
JoeBorn talks about their decision for USB 1.1. I haven't done any testing myself however.

LOL! I went to the link, and the guy there just cracked me up!

"...we really felt that the cost of true USB 2.0 support wasn't justified by the incremental performance improvement"

So the theoretical max speed was increased 40x. Even if you only get something like 10x (and that would be a pretty bad USB 2.0 device), it's FAR from an "incremental" perf improvement.

"Recently, cnet reviewed one of our competitors with firewire and they found actual speeds of 28 Mbps for firewire. This is consistant with what we've found in our internal testing of several competitive models, and in fact many were slower"

I guess this is the device they are talking about. That is by far the SLOWEST 1394 device I have ever heard of. That is really quite pitiful. That is not at all a fair comparison. The slowest spec'd speed for 1394 is 100Mbps. This is only getting 1/4 of that speed. Ouch. Numbers posted in the same thread (it's not in the Cnet review) for the ipod show a transfer rate of 80 Mbps for that device.

Here's another interesting set of statistics.

Anyone actually purchase this thing? How heavy does it feel and do you like it? What is Ogg?

Just go on the forums. They are a remarkably open community. Although you may be better off just READING as much as you can, and not posting <I would get one if....> posts.

It seems a bit larger than other options, like the 3rd gen Ipod, but that's a good thing IMO since it uses a standard laptop hard drive. As for Ogg, it is actually a media container. Vorbis is the actual encoding format. Kinda like the relationship between .AVI and Divx. However, OGG kicks MP3's ass when it comes to low bitrate encoding.

USB 1.1 is an issue with players this capacity. Some of the features are interesting - the FM tuner, and the ability to broadcast to FM (though those are typically finicky), recording - but think this one through before jumping.

Can you transfer files that aren't mp3s (or other music formats) to it? aka use it as a usb hard drive
Do you have to install the Sync Manager?

I've looked at the site and they seem to avoid this. (Which makes me think that the attractive answers are incorrect.)

The model with the addable 20gb "backpack" looks interesting...You could take the 20gig drive with you on long trips, and detach it and use the 128mb player for when you're going on a short trip or something.
