Neuro-linguistic Programming/Self-Hypnosis: Thoughts & opinions?

Geez, I'm gone for just a month and now the forums appears to be going to hell! Sheesh, how about some more intellectual discussions rather than constant flame wars? I remember when the OT forum used to be fun and enlightening... lets make it fun place again! I'll start it off w/ an NLP thread!

Well Anywho, I'm thinking of reading up on NLP. I've heard from people that this stuff can REALLY change your life; helps you get rid of problems, fears, and anxieties and guides you to be the person you want to be. I've been pretty much down in the gutters for a while now, and self-hypnosis looks pretty promising. Anyone have any ideas/comments on NLP, or maybe even book recommendations?

The only NLP type stuff I have heard or read about was the X-Show (about Men, stuff for Men, cars, sports, not like the Man Show)on cable. The show had a guest Ron Jeffries ( i think ...) and he talked about how you could get/seduce women using NLP. I chalked it up as one guys attempt to make money off the masses and never gave it another thought.

I haven't heard/read anything about NLP for 15 yrs. It's likely the faddish aspects of it have faded. That's a good thing. I think it can be a useful tool for shrinks but of limited value.
Frogs Into Princes is a good book about NLP.

hmm, interesting... do you believe in it's actual worth and claims? A lot of people who have tried it stand by NLP and swear by it, while those who haven't say it's just a hoax. Is NLP the same as hypnosis?

I think NLP might be described as a linguistics version of Body Language. Just like any tool it's value is dependant on the skill of the user.
But then I'm not particularly qualified, I've only read a coupla books about it.
<edit>NLP per se is not a hoax but a hoaxer can use it.</edit>
