[Security] Thanks to d0s for this one.

"Toshiba says it has developed new technology that could prove invaluable in the fight against hackers.

Researchers have come up with a new type of light emitting diode that fires out photons one at a time.

They say this could lead to optical fibre communications virtually impermeable to interception.

The discovery stems from research conducted by Toshiba in collaboration with researchers at Cambridge University.

Their work focused on incorporating semiconductor nano-technology into a LED.

They say the result - the regulated emission of single photons - will spur research into quantum cryptography, a form of optical communications that is safe from hacking.

Single photons can be used to authenticate users of an optical network and ensure their encrypted data is completely safe from interception.

The technique also allows the encryption keys to be changed each time, further reducing the risk of foul play.

Research leader Dr Andrew Shields said the discovery should prove of great importance for emerging broadband internet services, not least by boosting consumer confidence in e-commerce."
