I'm wondering what is a good cheap NIC and where I can get a 30 - 40 foot pass thure cable. I'm wondering if there would be any price saving benifet to making a 10 mbit network instead of a 100 mb because I'm going to network my P100 to my P400 for mostly priniting and file saving. Also would I need a fire wall to protect my PC from hacking vandless I don't have a static IP address and connect to the net by AOL and netzero for posting here. Would i be able to make the network work on two PC one runing win 95 A the other runing win 95B? or do I need some special software and if so where can i get it?
 
The network will run fine via Windows. Internet sharing over the network is a bit more tricky and will require extra programs such as Sygate or Wingate (or Windows 2000).

And you can get 10/100 PCI ethernet cards for under $8 if you can handle sub-par drivers and such.

Go with a D-Link or an older 3com card. They're nice.

Where can I get a cable online for cheap that can connect two NICs with out going throw a hub or switch? Or at least what that cable is called.
 
The cable is called a crossover cable. Normal "Patch" cables are straight through. Crossover cables swap the send and receive pins. I haven't had much luck finding anywhere online selling them at that length. I usually make them myself. CDW sells them, but we all know that CDW is far from the cheapest place online.

thanks but why does it say "Category RJ-45 Male to RJ-45 Male Cross-Over 50 foot gray patch cable" When isn't a patch cable used for like a hub or something and a crossover cable is what i need for two NIC to NIC? Also why would the 50 foot cable cost less then a 35 foot cable?
 
Patch cable is simply a cable with RJ-45 plugs on each end. the crossover designates that the wires are crossed. Crossover cables are also used to connect two hubs together when they don't have uplink ports.

Patching refers to just running a cable between two devices.
