Is it possible?
To network and xp with a win/me computer?

What would I need to purchase?

thanks.

Oh and will it drag my XP down by using up too much power?

Sure it's possible. Each PC would need a Network Interface Card (NIC). If you just want to connect the two machines you can use a CAT5 crossover cable. You could also use a router if you wanted to share internet access (broadband) with the two machines.

Networked computers are only connected for file and printer exchnge they are not dragging down one the other.

If you share the Internet, then yeah, the Internet per-se on each computer would be slower when it is used by both. That is what sharing means.

The content of the following links will provide you with a basic tutorial about Sharing Internet connection; it is short and to the point. The pages were written by me ages ago. Ignore the prices, and the specific choice of hardware, stick with the principles they are still the same.

Just use a router and hook them both up to it. Ethernet does not really use that much CPU power, so you should be fine with that.
