Networking.. you guessed it.. a MAC =(

okay, I am installing a network at an architecture firm, I have everything wired, cables run, wall plates, etc. the firm is on the first floor of an old historic house here in town.
anyway, the guy who owns the firm and is leasing the house, is sub-leasing the second floor to a friend of his to live in.

the first floor has about 5 pc's networked, with a dsl connection, with a d-link broadband router. all is well, and up and running.

now the guy upstairs wants to get on the dsl too, so this weekend I ran a cable run up to the second floor and all, and then I find out his computer is a Mac. 🙁 he wants me to come in and configure his mac to get on the internet through the dsl. I am assuming it will be simple, tcp/ip is tcp/ip, but I've little or no experience with macs as far as how to get into networking setup, etc. file sharing between the pcs and mac (as far as I know!) will not be needed, but he may want to be able to print on the printers downstairs.

but I'm counting on it that he won't. so for now - anyone know of a site that demonstrates how to get into a mac's network setup? or briefly describe it? as far as I know, its the lastest version of Mac OS, but I'm not sure. I'll just need to assign it a 192.168.0.x ip address and setup the default gateway for the d-link router, cross my fingers, and call it a day.

thanks

It's easier to set up IP on a Mac than it is a PC in my opinion.

Go to the top left where that lovely apple is. Click that, go to Control Panels. Go all the way down to TCP/IP. From here, go crazy and configure away.

Also, you may want to a couple more things while yer working on his TCP/IP settings. Hit Command (looks like an Apple) and U. Select Administration. Hit OK. Then go to the new Options dialogue box. Click that and you should get a new dialogue box. Uncheck the Load Only When Needed and hit OK.

You are done. Macs don't need to reboot after changing any TCP/IP settings.

neither do PC's.

unless you're running the joke series of OS's, win9x.

NT 5 - a real man's PC OS. no reboot needed

Yep, it's just that easy to do 🙂

I had to do the same thing at work, but I didn't have any help. But now that it's done it works perfectly 🙂

Yes, either have it set to DHCP, or do as you said, give it an IP and point it to the Router as a Gateway. Easy as pie!

However, you won't have file sharing between the PCs and the Mac with this setup. But you will be able to access the internet from all.

Enjoy!

I just started networking with Macs too. There's some good reading and some very good tips in the forums over at 8wire.com...that place is like a networking mecca. You should check it out.

Good luck.
