I'm trying to network two windows xp computers with a crossover cable. I ran the network setup on both computers, and they both say they're connected, but neither one can access the other. I enabled file and printer sharing. Both computers have firewalls (one zonealarm, the other nvidia hardware firewall). Any ideas?

Have you setup IP's for each? The network wizards do more harm than good so I've never really used them. Consequently I don't know for sure if they setup IP's for you however I would doubt that highly. If you want to network computers you have to have a network protocol installed and setup. TCP/IP is installed by default so you don't have to worry about that but you will have to setup your IP information. If your trying to setup an internet connection just enable ICS. That will take care of the addressing for you.

What ip should I use? does it matter? What is a subnet mask and a default gateway? I don't know much about networks.

I disabled both my firewalls and then it sort of worked. Both could see each other, but I couldn't share internet. When I tried to enable ICS it said it could not be enabled and then I got an error message saying generic host for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close or something like that. Then my display was messed up. So I rebooted and it still was messed up so I did a system restore. Now I'm trying to get back to where I was before the restore.

same on both ----> subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1

on computer A... ip 192.168.1.2
on computer B... ip 192.168.1.3

create your shares on each pc

now go to one of the PC's go to RUN
type \\(ip address) then click ok

your shares should come up for that PC

But he hasn't said HOW he's sharing the Internet cnx. Is it two NIC's in one machine? A router\swithc\hub? I think he needs to provide a little more info so that we can understand better and provide netter assistance. Just my $.02

Your right, he doesn't say anything about getting on the internet. I am assuming he's not access it since it wasn't mentioned. :)
