Networking wizard problems

Toshiba laptop XP
Compaq desktop XP

I have two computers connected by a crossover cable.
I have had success before networking these two computers. Not tonite :-(
Today at the local library(laptop) I did set up a Local Area Connection to connect with the libraries network. I later saw that I did not have a good ethernet cable from the library, I used their cable, the clip was broken off. I was later able to hook to their network fine.

I have the Desktop PC setup, and it saves the networking wizard promps. The name of the computer shows up in the Local Network under My Network Places. It show three, the C drive, and two seperate shareddocs, just as before

On the laptop I have it setup the same way as the desktop, same prompts, a different computer name, same workgroup.
The folders drives, never show up, the Local Network never shows up under my Network places.

I look on the back of my Desktop, the ethernet cable is green light is lit up.
I look on the back of my laptop, it lits up on boot, then the green light goes out.

When rebooting the laptop, the desktop says network unplugged.
