Networking within Townhouse - This should work, but it's not!! Losing sleeep

Ok, so i'm not a computer novice, and i've googled up the wazoo trying to figure this out, but i can't get it, so i implore you wonderful people for help! 🙂

Here's the situation.
I rent a room in a townhouse, and the house has network wiring from my room to his closet into a router (i have zero access to this).

Connecting my PC to the wall, i can get an IP, 192.168.0.x.

I have tried every combination i know to get that connection from the wall into a switch (router w/ DHCP turned off), but it just doesn't work.

I used to get around this by creating a Network Bridge in Vista, and connecting the Switch/Router via the 2nd NIC, and that worked like a charm. However, i've since upgraded to WHS & of course, that does NOT have Network Bridging.

Anyone have any clue what i can do that i haven't already tried? :-/

thx in advance

unless he has port security setup to limit the amount of MAC addresses on a single port (highly doubtful) there should be no issue with using a switch.

do you get link lights when plugging in the switch? you arent connecting it via the WAN port are you?

yeah, i get activity lights on the switch i believe. And no, not using the WAN (although i've tried that just in case 🙂)

Are you connecting the cable from the wall to the switch (LAN) side of the router and not the WAN side?

very cool. so assuming i'm reading that correct, that should work regarding internet access, but it mentions i wouldn't be able to get LAN file sharing access, right? :-(

maybe i'll just try that. i've gotten my roomate involved as something fishy is definitely going on. He has another port in his office, and has basically the identical setup, and it works for him!!! He reboots the system, connected straight through a switch, everything Automatic, and it works for him.

Exact same switch in my room (i got just a standard 5-port switch now), and i get the activity light from the wall, but the systems do not get an IP address!! I'm ready to pull out my hair!!!

I gots a question.

Are you connecting it to an uplink port or using a crossover cable?
