Networking with Linux & WinXP

GasX

Lifer
I want to mess around with my second PC and make it a Linux box. If I add a very large capacity HDD for the purposes of backing up the other PCs on the network, will I have any problems connecting from a WinXP desktop and a WinXP laptop? Also, is there a way to automatically run backups on other PCs on the network at night?

I'll leave the backup question for others who know more about windows cron jobs, but the connection itself is easily facilitated with samba.
Samba is a file sharing protocol that supports multiple operating systems, and works well with windows.

yeah. samba is quite easy.

look up the directions for your distro and you will be pleasantlysurprised as to how easy it is to set up...

A quick install, a few commands such as start samba and a quick edit of the samba.conf file where you set your workgroup name...and you're in business.
