Two people have asked me to help them do this via a cross over cable. One was a new notebook with another older notebook, the seconds was two pcs. I set them up just right, everything seemed good. But they both give the error that the cable is not plugged in. The cross over cable is fine, I checked it with a fluke one tough tester. I have my xp machine setup on a switch and it runs fine.
Does XP just require a hub?
