Networking Windows 3.11

My cousin wanted me to post this, maybe you all can help him!

<< I have a 486sx laptop that I need to network to my 98 machine. I have absolutly no idea how to do this however. I have networked the 98 machine many times before. The laptop is running windows 3.11 and 16-bit networking is not my area of expertise. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! >>

He's gonna have a fun time with this.....
First, you need to get card enablers for the NIC he's gonna use, and configure them (some of the later ones would pretty much self-configure). This is the layer that ties the physical hardware to a semi-standard layer for the upper stack.

Next, you need to get a packet driver. I think Clarkson....something like that had drivers for many of the ISA NICs, and some for PCMCIA NICs. The packet drivers are the protocol stack that ties to the point enablers. All of the configuration is done through text-based config files.

Two possibly easier solutions:

Get him to upgrade to Windows for Workgroups...almost as ugly as the point enablers, but at least the network stuff is "integrated" into the package.

or

If you or he have a copy of Norton Ghost 2001, it can create a DOS boot disk, with the network drivers, and then once you have the files and drivers chosen and configured, they can be transferred to the hard drive.

The next trick is going to be getting clients for 3.11 (ftp, telent...). You might be able to get a web browser from NCSA that'll run on 3.11.

All-in-all, probably the easiest all-around solution is moving to Windows for Workgroups (if you can find it).

Get 'em to pick an option, then we can elaborate on the details......

Good Luck

Its been a long time. 🙂 I remember that 3.11 was "Windows for workgroups"
that had native network support. The details were different, but it was vaguely simular to 95/98. Basically install netbeui and it will talk.
While the drivers configuration was in a file lanman.ini, most everything could be accessed from the control panel.
There was a compatibly switch between NT 3.1 an WFW to allow browsing, buried seven levels in the registry, so I don't know if you are going to get browsing to play. However, the net use and net show commands worked from dos. If you get to that point, let me know.

If its win 3.1, not workgroups, Network support was an external set of files. Came on the lanman 2.1 disk set. Or, there were third party packages that did the trick. "FTP Software" had a package called TCP/IP. Netmanage Chameleon was also very good and popular. Also something called distinct, which was included with a lot of utilities. It wasn't worth the price (free) but it did work after a fashion.

I still have a 486 in the closet that is running workgroups, so I could take a look, rather than dancing. I think its running chameleon, but I could see what was up.

Hope this helps;

Doug
