Senior member
ok i have an old Gateway computer with Win95 and a new Athlon with Win98. can i just stick NIC cards into them and put a normal cable between them to network them? i've been trying but i only see myself on the network, like when im on the Athlon i only see the Athlon, and when im on the gateway i only see the Gateway. any advice would be welcome.

You need to install a protocol, such as NetBEUI, and make sure they are in the same workgroup. You also need a crossover cable between the two machines.

Yes you can do that, just make sure the cable your using is cross-over CAT5 cable. A cable that would work from NIC to HUB is normal twisted pair cable, which will not work from NIC to NIC. So make sure the cable your using is cross over cable. If you can only see yourself in the network make sure you shared a drive on the other computer, if that doesn't work then it's the cable your using. You also need to make sure you have the NetBEUI protocol installed. 🙂
