As Ojai stated, make sure both 'puters are named and they are in the same workgroup. I forget where you do this, but the Wi help files should show this easily.

i'm also having the same problem

both systems are named differently but in the same workgroup, i have also manually assigned IP add (192.168.1.49 and 192.168.1.50).
now my XP can detect ME but cannot access it, my XP has only 1 user account so thats the administrator and still i cannot access the ME, the ME network cannot detect my XP system at all.
any new ideas and suggestions?

here's one:

in the win98, login with the exact same username and password that you have in the winxp box

Hey Jack .... thanks for the very informative links.

I've been having some of the same problems getting file sharing to work on my 802.11b wireless home network. Win 98 on my desktop, hard wired to the wireless router. Laptop with Win XP with a wireless PCMIA adapter card. Internet connection sharing has never been a problem from the first day I installed everything. I couldn't get file sharing to work and I just gave up on the idea. That was about a year and a half ago. Recently, I've decided to give the file sharing another try. I completely uninstalled Zone Alarm from both machines. I finally got each PC to look like they were going to share files, I mean I have files and folders and a printer marked as being shared on each machine, but I still can't get either PC to see the other one.

I've spent some time searching for threads about this problem. Found this one and the links you provided. I haven't had time to read all the info yet, but I already see several things I need to try. LOL.

Anyway, when I get home later, I'll be working on all of this. I actually have hope that this file sharing thing may just work after all! If I do get it working, my next challenge will be getting Zone Alarm re-installed and working. One challenge at a time though.

Anyway, thanks for the assistance. I feel like I've been helped, whether I have or not. ;)

in xp you must have a username, if you don't know it could simply be 'administrator'

in 98 if you don't have a username then you can create one. i don't remember how though... it must be in the control panel - user or something like that.
