Networking went out not much works

My mom brought over her laptop wanting me to do some simple stuff like clear out temp internet files. My kids have been using it for AIM and internet when all the other computers in the house were in use. The other day they complained it wasn't working.

This thing was loaded with spyware and was giving some kind of a warning from somewhere. It was a pain as online virus scan wouldn't finish. I ended up downloading super spyware on another machine and brought it to laptop and did a scan. Found just over 100 entries. Computer now runs smoothly but no internet. It seems the internal wireless quit working as it won't report any wireless networks anymore. I installed a usb wireless but it will report there is a problem with the connection. I check the ip and it didn't get assigned an ip. So I hook it up to wired network and I get the same error. So I manually assign an ip and the connection reports connected and working properly but the internet doesn't work. I can however connect to my network and get to shared files

It is probably something easy but I am stumped. Can someone help?
Thanks.

Have you tried resetting the router and modem? unplug both power cords for a few minutes then plug the modems power cord back it wait for it to finish setting up and have all the appropriate lights come on then plug in the router. or if you have just a gateway( modem and router in one) then just unplug that one for a few minutes then plug back in.

If both the wireless and wired connections are not working, it needs a Winsock fix - download from
http://www.brothersoft.com/winsockfix-66663.html , and run Winsock fix. << This screw up is common with spyware

You can not just assign a static ip and expect it to work. Are you using a router? What are its settings - is DHCP is enabled? - that assigns an IP. You need to give complete details of your set up -OS -router or switch - static or dynamic ips etc etc - before we can suggest possible remedies.

I am using a router with dhcp enabled. I have not reset the router as my laptop is using wireless with no problems. I also have 2 desktops using wired connection. all are setup using dhcp. That is why I didn't feel the need to reset it. This laptop is the only one having problems.

I will give that winsock fix a try. Thanks

Edit/
Slowlearner looks like you are right on the money. I just ran the proggie and internet is working. I haven't removed the static ip or tried the wireless yet. I have a few things to update and or download first. Thanks again!

Both wired and wireless are getting an ip assigned by the server again. Thanks again slowlearner.

I guess the onboard wireless is gone. With the antenna on it detects no networks. The usb wireless I plugged in finds 2 other than my network. My laptop also detects 2 more networks other than mine. Could the spyware have changed something to cause it not to work? It was working the other day before the spyware did the major take over the other day.

Just happy to have it working again. Even if the onboard wireless is shot.
