This should be an easy one.

I can connect my Mac to my NT 4.0 Server, but now I have a new PC workstation (Windows 98), and it's cabled to my Linksys hub. Network card is working fine.

What needs to be installed on the workstation, and what do I need to do, exactly, to logon to the server? Do I use Client for Microsoft Windows?

I know what the server's computer name is, but do I need to know the workgroup name assigned to the server?

Can somebody walk be through this?

Thanks!

You only need "Client for Microsodt Networks" installed along with your network protocol of choice. If your NT Server is setup as a PDC you need to setup your 98 machine to logon to a NT Domain. This setting is under the properties of "Client for Microsodt Networks." If not, then you do not need to do this (you may not need to do it anyway, but this is the way I have always done it). No matter which way you have your server setup, you need to setup an user account on the server and set the permissions for that account so you can access the shared information. Once the account is setup, you need to logon with the username and password on your 98 machine.

You do not need to setup a new account if you already have multiple accounts on the server that you use, other than Admin. I would reccomend using a seperate account or one you do not use so you can keep track of who is using what.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm still trying to make this work, using your suggestions.

The "network protocal of my choice"...Do I need to have TCP?IP configured, with another IP address? Or is that only for connecting to the internet?

Thanks again. I tried it your way, with a new user profile and using the Domain name of the server, but I couldn't log on. It said "no domain name was found". I guess I need TCP/IP configured?

I'll call my ISP and get another IP address.

Thanks for any additional help you can provide.

If your NT server is not setup as a Primary Domain Controller you do not need to have your 98 machine logon to a domain. You just need to use the user name and password that you set up on the server and use that to logon with. As for the the IP address, that will work fine for accessing data on the server. You mentioned something about getting another IP address from your ISP, do they charge extra for additional IPs? If so, you may want to consider getting a router. It will save you the cost of additional IPs and it will add a buffer between you and the Internet to help prevent hackers from getting in to your network. I am assuming that you have a hub/switch of some sort to network your PCs, if you do then all you would need is a single port router and connect it to your hub/switch. You would then enter the config info from your ISP into the router and then the router would supply your PCs with their own IPs that would not be visable from the Internet.
