Ok here's the senario, i have 4 computers, and i have them hooked up to the hub via patch cable, and it says to use cat. 5 stp. i know i have cat5 but what is stp, are most cables stp anyways? And i hooked it all up and it doesnt seem to detect ne of the computers, the workgroup and ip's are all configured.

arlotto h104 hub link

thnx much

addition to this is that in the arlotto site it says it comes with 4utp ports but in the pdf file it says it needs stp cat 5 cables, does it matter?

update again, i finally got it to fly, but i have another comp, which is my brothers, and that has a 10baseT nic in it and the hub is a 100 only so would that effect that in any way?

STP stands for shielded twisted pair. It just means that the cable is shielded to help reduce interference from electrical devices. Also, in the manual PDF it says that you can use UTP (unshielded twisted pair) cable, not that it matters. The shielding would not have anything to do with whether or not the cables worked or not, unless there is enough interference to cause the cable to not work. As, for the cables not working, did you make the cables yourself or did you buy them? If you made them, you may want to check the connections. Also, try pinging the IP that is assigned to the NIC that is in the computer that you are on. If it pings successfully then you know that your NIC is working properly.

Hey onza. First off, forget about the STP. Sheilded cables will not make a difference for you. (Could make more problems) Just make sure the cables you got are really working. (the black cables we never tested) Maybe that little hub doesn't work right. (I don't think anyone tested it so it could be bad.) All else fails, try a different hub.

See ya at work.

P.S.- Get back to your homework dude. J/K
