yesterday i needed to know how to make a cale crossover, but i determined i didn't need that after all....however, i know that my straight through cable works in a shorter version i made. I think my internet upstairs doesn't work, becuase the cable is too long (over 150ft), and the signal that my server is giving may not be strong enough....is there a way I can amplify the network signal? The reason I think it may be the signal strength, is because upstairs right now I get an alternating message every other second saying "network cable unplugged > connection enabled > network cable unplugged > connection enabled, and so on....i will be very greatful if i get internet upstairs working. Thx.

If you make a short cable and it works, but an identically connected long one doesn't, I'll bet that you have mixed up the pairs in the cable. A short cable with the pairs not wired properly will frequently work, but a longer one will fail. CAT5 Pinouts describes the correct wiring, you want the 586B connections for normal network cables. Note that the twisted pairs do NOT all connect to adjacent pins on the connectors.

You should be fine to 100 meters (328 feet), so most likely the cable is misconfigured (or you could have a bad cable and need to pull a new one)

Check the NIC card too, sometimes those pins get corroded or bent or whatever but they dont make a constant connection, that could be why the link is flapping between enabled and disabled. You can test that by wiggling plug around inside the NIC port, pulling on it like you're trying to pull it out, and pushing it in and see if it enables or disables the connection. If it does, swap out the NIC card and try again.
