Networking PC to Apple equipment. HELP!!!

I'm in a guesthouse and the main house has a roadrunner cable router (looks like it is from a different era), connected to an Airport Extreme base station. I can pull the signal with my Dell laptop with a 1350 Mini wireless card built in, but...

But I can't get the signal with my USB Wireless G adapter.

I took a trip to the store and brought home a "Belkin Range Extender" - to no avail.

Also, I have a Shuttle cube and therefore have no extra PCI slot. Problems, problems... so:

Can only an "Airport Extreme" work as a repeater for another?
Is there an antenna I can buy?
Is it possible to stay away from buying more Apple product?

I've been toying with this stuff for a couple days now and am totally perplexed. Your help would be appreciated.
