I have a screaming fast DSL connection and a Cayman 3220H. My friend, across the street, a very busy street, wants some of my DSL. I said sure, but you have to pay for the way to connect your PC to my Cayman. There is about 150-250Ft from his house to mine and would going wireless be the best option? This would be cool. Although his PC is only a Pentuim MMX 150! How would i go wireless across such a distance? or would CAT5 do the job. There is a convient drainage pipe that we could use to go under the street. Lastly am i a complete moron for even asking this question? =-) Is this possible? Thanks,

MannyC;

Sorry for the negative answer, but I would not run any form of copper out-of-doors.
The university lost tons of terminals in the PDP-11 days, and finally went fiber for 9.6 terminal connections.
I would look at picking up a couple of 10 base FL transceivers,
and 2 hubs/switches/nics with AUI connectors. Not cheep, but safer, and more dependable than anything else. Lots of options on the used market if you aren?t afraid of something different.
3COM 2700's set up in back to back mode will give you a ATM 1483 PVC bridge, and since everyone is moving away from them, they or something similar should be dirt cheep.

Can't comment on the wireless. It would depend on the placement of the antennas, if the equipment operated in "relay" mode ... Dave from the office looked into it, maybe he can comment.

Wireless should do the trick, but you'd have to be careful where you placed your antenna on your end. You'd want a good wireless base station at your house, positioned as close to a window as possible aimed at his place. His computer would work best if it was near a window aimed at your place. I'm not sure if there are wireless PC cards with non-fixed antennas, but if you could find one you'd be set.

You can always just go pick up some wireless gear at CompUSA or somplace with a good return policy. If it doesn't work, take it back.

Not to sound like the church lady here, but sharing your DSL connection between households is almost certainly a violation of the service contract with your DSL provider. If they know what they are doing, they may know fairly soon what you are doing, and then neither you nor your friend will have DSL. Can't your buddy just get a DSL connection?

Also, most places have rules / laws about what you can run under a street, even if there is a handy drainage pipe. Running CAT5 under a street in most municipalities (well, the ones that are savvy to such stuff) requires much dancing and sacrificial offerings being made to the zoning gods.

And the distance between your houses is great enough that an ordinary wireless access point isn't likely to do the trick for you. If you were both outdoors, perhaps... :D

Good luck.

Jim

I'd have to agree that this is bending the rules of your service alot. Sharing within a household is one thing, sharing with another household is totally different.

BUT, a decent wireless setup could reach the distances you've described. If possible get better antenaes. That's what I always do with the cisco/aironet stuff and get fabulous reception. Do as garion said and keep the antenae directly on the window frame and aim at each other.

Ditch the cat5 thru drain pipe idea. you're just begging for lightning hits. Come to think of it fiber would be a nice idea given the price of the wireless stuff. I think 100 BT<->100 FL tranceivers are about 80 bucks. two of those plus one long fiber couldn't be more than $360.

if it doesn't work, then hey return it!

<edit> here's an old timers trick to running fiber throu drain pipe - grab fluffy the kitty and tie one end of the fiber to her collar, throw 'er down the pipe and place a kitty treat at the other end. No fishing, no mess, no trouble!!! :D

LOL I doubt they would find out. Since my cayman completely hides all PC it is sharing to. But that would be bad if i got kicked off my DSL connection. I doubly he really wants to waste the the DSL connection on just a Pentium 150 MMX, so i am trying to share. =-) If we can find a relativly cheap way then were goig to do it. Is there a way to amp the signal to a regular wireless home newtwork?

lol, i've been doing a bunch of research on 802.11 for a paper and got a kick out of your quote spidey. i like the clever cat5 wiring strategy...of course, that could be b/c i'm more of a dog person.
