Networking newbie problem

I have just purchased a new PCI ethernet card for one of my pc's, as the other one already has onboard LAN. I was looking at a cost effective way to connect the 2 PC's together to share printer, files, and ADSL connection, so decided to link them directly, without a router, switch etc.

This was my first network, so I took it slowly. I've managed to share files as well as the printer. However, the ADSL connection is causing me problems. The network recognises the connection. I am able to surf the net from the host PC (btw it's a usb modem), and the client PC recognises the connection as a Gateway. However, when I try to surf the web using Internet explorer or sign into msn messenger, it does not work. I know there is nothing wrong in my hardware etc. I'm just a little off in my configuration. Could someone please show me the light?

What OS are you running on each system? Do you have ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) enabled on the Host computer? ICS was in 98SE, ME, 2k and XP.

Well, I've run ICS a number of times and everything is recognised, as on the client machine my host is recognised as a gateway. However, it seems as though I don't know how to make it use that connection. On my ISP's website, it says to 'set client to obtain ip address via DCHP'. I don't know how to do that. Can anyone tell me.

As for the router, no, I do not live in the US. I live in the UK, and our prices are a MAJOR rip-off compared to yours (PC usually costs 300-400 dollars more)

One question you did not answer or I would help you, what Operating System are you running on each computer? Setup is different with different OS's.

Thankyou very much for the link JackMDS. You don't know how greatful I am, because my network is now up and running and everyone can access the net. I just needed to configure the proxy settings on the client.

Once again thanx for all your help guys.
