Possibilities: 1. Make sure computer belongs to a workgroup, not a domain - it may be passing time searching for a domain server. 2. Under tcp/ip, make sure it is not configured to get its IP address from a DHCP server, may be passing time looking for one. Just plug in private IP address of 192.168.0.1, mask 255.255.255.0. And turn off WINS.

This is a common problem when people install network cards for the first time. When Win98/ME install TCP/IP, its default is to get its IP configuration from a DHCP server. A DHCP server hands out IP info automagically for clients. Windows will wait a very long time before it decides there is no DHCP server, and finish booting. Nothing too tricky, just a little networking knowledge.
