networking mac to pc

hello, i was wondering if ne body out there has had ne success in networking a mac to a pc, if so i'd appreciate if ya could help me on how to do it, thanx!

you would need to run windows 2000 and install the Appletalk protocal.

I don't know any specifics (was a total grunt then), but one place I worked had about 10 PCs with Win98 and 95, and 4 or 5 old Macs. It seemed to work great, but it wasnt really a network like when 2+ windows machines, it was just basic printer/file sharing. Don't know how, but it can be done!

thanx for letting me know if it can be done hungrypete, i just wanted to make sure of that first. All i want to do is printer and file sharing so that's perfect for me. Now all i need is if someone knows how to actually do this.

For printer and file sharing just get DAVE. It is a Windows networking client for the mac. Easy to set up and works well. It is from

i'm pretty sure apple implemented the TCP/IP protocol as well as Appleshare in the network. *i'm not a mac guy ok?* i would imagine that you would just assign an IP to the MAC (in Apple->Chooser). That's all I know, hope it helps.

Correct they have TCP/IP, so they speak the same protocol, but they don't speak the same language. You need DAVE to make the Mac speak SMB, windows networking.

Using Dave 2.5 or higher is the way to go. I have had a couple people test Mac OS 9.0 that has support for TCP/IP without the use of Dave.

It has nothing to do with TCP/IP. MacOS 9 will not share with Windows without using DAVE. TCP/IP is the protocol. The language windows speaks is SMB, Macs speak AppleTalk, Novell speaks IPX, some unix speaks NFS. These *all* talk over TCP/IP, but speak different languages. So on the Mac you need DAVE for windows sharing, under unix you need Samba.
