Networking issue on Hotwire installation

I recently had Hotwire installed in my home and removed my Comcast system. Part of my network includes a remote hard drive that I move downloaded movies to watch later. I had the network working on the Comcast system but haven't been able to in the new Hotwire install. Here is the configuration:

ZXHN F688 PON ONT home gateway (Hotwire)
Numerous Computers connected wirelessly
home gateway has 4 LAN connections. I was told that I could use LAN2 and LAN3
My computer is wired and connected to LAN3
A Netgear WNDR3400V2 is connected to LAN2
The Netgear is a wireless router but is only being used as a switch/server (not sure if this is the correct terminology).
The reason I am using the Netgear is that it has a USB and a hard drive can be connected to it. I am using it to move movies I download from the internet to the hard drive using ReadyShare.
Also connected to the Netgear is a Sony N-200 Streaming Media Player.
Once the movies are on the drive, I move the USB to the Sony and watch the movies.
I fixed the IP address of the Netgear to 192.168.1.21 which is in the range for LAN2.
When I log into the router (192.168.1.1) I cannot see the Netgear.
The wirelessly connected devices can see the Netgear.
The only way I can see the Netgear is if I plug my computer into the Netgear instead of the router.
It will work for a while but then my connection to the internet slows and it seams like it creates a conflict somehow (not explaining this well but if I run a speedtest, the signal is very erratic).

Can someone suggest a configuration that might work. Do I need to modify the settings in the Hotwire Gateway or the Netgear to get them to work together.

It looks like you're dealing with a double NAT, both your gateway and your netgear are handing out addresses. The best way to solve this I imagine will be to disable the router functionality on your netgear, so that it acts as a switch. I cannot say for sure if the USB functionality will continue to work if you do that, however.
