Hey there guys I've got a major situation here.

For the last year or so, on and off I've been trying to solve this problem.

I've got two computers here and for the last year I've been trying to network them.

I've tried it through my netgear hub to no avail, the computers couldn't see eachother, couldn't see eachother or anything. I gave up.

Today I installed a second ethernet card in my main desktop, took an ethernet cable and ran it from my second computer to my second ethernet card. Guess what? Windows XP says there is no cable connected! WTF?!

I can't even connect to the internet through my main desktop on the second computer! nothing is working and I'm sick of this!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What OS are they running?

And connecting two computers directly requires a crossover cable.

This wont work unelss you use a crossover cable, thats why XP says there is no cable connected.
Regarding your problems, are you using TCP/IP?
If you have connected them to a hub, have you tried to force the NICs to 10 OR 100, Half OR Full duplex?

Important For the purpose of the initial setting, disable all software Firewall (including WinXP native ICF); disable any active Virus scan or any other utility that might intercept Network Traffic.

The following Collection of Links might help:

If you are not concern about internal security WinXP has a fast simple method of sharing, no user permissions, and no passwords.

WinXP Pro has an additional more secure method:

Ensure that you have a correctly functioning hub, ensure you have two correctly functioning cat5 cables (not crossover) and plug them each into the hub and if your hardware (NICs and hub) are functioning correctly the green lights on the hub will come on and WinXP will see the cable.

Then, configure them as the same work group and it should work. But there's lots more to try.
