Some help needed...I just moved into a basement apartment. My landlord has a wi-fi connnection upstairs (dsl/Linksys 802.11b router). I have a wireless router from my previous apartment. First of all can you send a signal between to routers and then to a PC Card or USB to increase signal strength? Or is the best way to find the best signal with a USB desktop (is USB truly better?) and hope for the best that the signal reaches the basement. I am checking the signal tonight with his laptop. Any recommendations on quality wireless USB desktop if thats what I should get. Thanks for any help, new at this whole WI-FI thing...Any other better ways to set this up would be great also..

Welcome to the Network Forum.

Unfortunately (unless the two Routers are of the Buffalo line) almost all Wireless Cable/DSL Routers can not talk one to the other.

If you have a solid reception in the basement, you can either buy an Access Point that can work in Client mode (D-Link 900AP+, Linksys WAP11) or a Client Bridge (Linksys WET11). Connect what ever you get to a regular port on your Cable/DSL Router, and use the Router as a Switch with an Access Point.

Thanks Jack...
Let me just break this down for myself to try to understand...So if the signal is not strong enough to reach my wireless card in my basement I can increase the strength by...
Purchase an access point or bridge which will take the signal from upstairs router and route it to my wireless card. Do I need to use my router in my basement also or can I send the signal from the access point or bridge directly to my card? Sorry new to this...thanks again

If you have only one computer, and the Wireless card in this computer can receive the signal then you do not need any thing else.

If you have more than one computer and you need to use your Wireless Router, then you need to plug a Bridge to the Wireless Router since two Wireless Routers can not communicate.

If the signal in the basement is weak it is a different story.
