Okay so here's the deal, the LAN seems okay, but I can't get anything out of the cable modem at all.

If any of you are familiar with Microsoft Base Station Management, under Wide Area Network (WAN) settings Dynamic

This is a healthy setting

Broadband connection: Connected
WAN IP address: 68.233.2xx.xx
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 68.233.2xx.1
Primary Domain Name Service (DNS): 24.52.xxx.xxx
Secondary DNS: 24.52.xxx.xxx

On the faulty setup, here's what I get

Broadband connection: Disconnected
WAN IP address: 68.233.2xx.xx
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 68.233.2xx.1
Primary Domain Name Service (DNS): (space left blank)
Secondary DNS: (space left blank)

Multiple release/renew's in the management tool result in absolutely no change, neither does restarts/reboots of the cable modem, the router, and the computer.

Here's the kicker. when I try to plug the cable modem back into the computer directly, I still can't get an internet connection. After going to ipconfig, attemps at /release /renew always end in failure (basically times out). However, when I plug everything back into the original linksys, it works fine.

I've tried cloning the mac address for the linksys but to no avail. Any ideas?

First things first. You need to forget the routers and figure out why it doesn't work when the modem is plugged directly to the PC.

You may need to have your ISP reprovision your modem.

Once it's working when directly connected, you can start working on adding the MS router.

I would think that it has to do with the Linksys MAC address, I can't imagine any other reason why it would work with the linksys, but not directly to your PC. Unless you really messed up your networking protocols.

yeah that's what i figured too, so i figured cloning the mac accress would work, but to no avail. sigh. time to give sbc global a call.
