Too lazy to click? heres the synopsis:

I bought two nic, two cables and a hub. I have a win2k machine that i want to network with a win98se machine, i tried following the steps at homepclan.com and could not get it to work, anyone willing to help me out. my main problem was not being able to find the right setting under networking in win2k.

any help greatly appreciated.

Hardcode each machine.

Make one of them say... 192.168.1.10 & the other to 192.168.1.20 or something like that. Use a Class A subnet (255.0.0.0), & you should be good to go.

Or, if all you want is file sharing, forget about TCP/IP & simply install NetBEUI.

Viper GTS

viper i did that, i have two subsequent ips for both machines and a subnet or 255.255.255.0

but still nothing.

If you want good instructions on a website, check out timhiggins.com.

I have the exact same operation at my house. What you need to do is make the server(win2k) machine set to 192.168.0.1 and the client(win98) machine set to 192.168.0.2 and your subnet 255.255.255.0 (at least that's what I use, I'm sure Viper's will work just as well)...and then install TCP/IP, and NetBEUI if you want...check file/printer sharing if you want, and then it should work. Do some pinging to check it.

TCP/IP should be all you need. Be sure to give both cards an IP and a subnet as Viper Suggested. Also, be sure to put in the same workgroup for both machines.

Add file and print sharing for both machines, and then share out a folder/drive on each machine.

Try pinging the IP addresses of one machine from the other, and then vice versa. If you can ping them, then everything should be up and running.

dumb questions -
1) what type of networking cable did you buy
2) are the lights working on a) hub b)NIC

Try setting primary network logon to 'Client for Microsoft Networks'. Then make sure you put in a password on each machine (the same password is good). Then try installing NetBEUI (Microsoft Protocol).

I was having similar problems recently and had tried everything until then, and that fixed it 🙂 (I have exactly the same setup as you, minus having Win2k on one machine)

Good luck

you don't need a hub for networking two computer.

you juse need ONE CROSSOVER CABLE and plug both end in each of the NIC of your machines

I have the same setup plus some additional crap on it.

I assume the win2k machine is using the internet. Question, are you connecting through modem or lan to get on net?
