Networking hell, Help! Please!

I've been at this for a couple of weeks. I've networked computers in the past without too much difficulty but this has me stumped.

Here's the situation:

Office set up, need 2 computers now, possibly more in the future. Need to share a dial up connection, no cable/DSl available. Identical setups in 3 offices.

Plan 1: Bought 3 Com home connect 4port switch w/ modem/LAN and printer connections. Built in hardware firewall.

Connects fine but application required by office requires it's own firewall and the 3 Com blocks communication with Check-point Secure Remote VPN-1. 3com unit CAN open ONE port to the outside world but I need 2 or more.... Scratch that idea.

Switch to down and dirty plan, since only 2 units are needed at the moment, use crossover cable and internet connection sharing in W 98 SE. Units connect and see each other, second unit triggers dial-up on main unit. HOWEVER at this point neither can see the internet! IE 6.0 lost it's binding to the dial-up adapter and won't connect to the internet on either unit. Reinstall W 98 SE, try dial up on main unit and it works fine. Enable sharing and it looses it's connectivity again!

What the heck is going on???

I need to get these units into the offices by Monday and I am at a loss as to what to try next. I would consider using W2K, but machines are Pentium Pros running at 180mhz w/126m of memory. Any benefit in doing that?

Any and all help will be much appreciated!

pentium pro runs NT/win2k much faster then it will run a win98 OS. Penitum pro was designed for 32 bit only OS. win98 is still a mixe bag. Go try win2k, the ICS on it is much better.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I will load it on one or two of the machines and give it a try.....
