Networking frustrates me to no end. Linux + Windows file sharing

I'm trying to setup Samba Peer to Peer using this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202605&highlight=samba

I've followed everything, and now my problem is that my laptop and desktop and roommate's computer, which are connected on the same router, can't connect to each other. They can't even ping each other. All get online just fine, and none of them have any firewalls of any type.

I'm just confused. How do you NOT be able to even ping computers on the same router?

There is no firewall. I'm on a clean install of Windows and the Windows firewall has never been activated. My roommate's desktop doesn't have a firewall, and I'm pretty sure my Ubuntu linux laptop doesn't have a firewall either because it's a clean install as well. To make things really cool, my friend had no problem network interfacing with my Ubuntu linux laptop just a couple of days ago. These three computers just can't seem to ping each other, and in any sort of combination to boot. I disabled the firewall features in my router (Linksys WRT54G) and still no go.

The windows sp2 firewall activates itself---and refuses to go away---go to the windows security center in the control panel and check on its settings. About the best you can do is
turn it off and check I have a firewall solution I will monitor myself. But every little setting change you make to your network will often result in the sp2 firewall popping up to save the day---regardless if you want it to or not.--and then you must again tell it to go back to sleep. I currently use a better software firewall---and the sp2 firewall annoys the heck out of me.

If you have a computer running XP with service pack 2---you have the sp2 firewall.

I am a believer in softwall firewalls---but I am not a believer in the sp2 firewall whose only virtue is being better than nothing.
