Networking efficiency

Can somebody help me with tools to determine network efficiency ?

Ummm, could you be a bit more specific? What part of the network do you need to test?

I need to check the efficiency of switches (Intel) and the cabling that has been laid out.

I have face a problem when we were evaluating a backup device. Over the network (10/100 mbps) we got a speed which was only 10 Gb/hr. Hence we started talking about efficiency of the current system
