networking/domain questions

I helped some people out today with adding a win98 laptop to a small lan.

they have a w2k server/domain with a wireless linksys router, win98 workstations, winxp workstations, a win98 laptop, and a win2k laptop.

all connections to the the router are wireless, except for the server..

all the connections to the router are dhcp.

all the computers give the popup bootup error message that they cant locate a domain server.. yet once the desktop arrives, the network can be browsed.. and the server accessed..

the win2k laptop does not give any domain errors at bootup.. (though I didnt check the event viewer)..

i checked active directory and some of the computers are listed and some are not, but it didnt make a difference adding them..

is this because of dhcp and the wireless cards? would giving them static ip's fix the problem?

Windows 2000 domain is not compatible with older NT-based domain. At the install time, you have an option to make Windows 2000 domain backward compatible with NT-based domain. If you elected to have allow that option, you can create a computer account that is pre-Windows 2000 domain compatible for your Windows 98 machines.

wow.. so they are outta luck unless they want to reinstall the server? (i saw the pre 2000 option when adding the computers in active directory, but it didnt seem to affect anything.. obviously..lol )

No, not really. They should be able to enable that option after as well.

I just re-read your message again and just wondering if you have setup the Win98 machines to logon to domain in the network configuraiton. Also did you put in the the correct domain name in the Workgroup tab?

ya did that.... i tried a couple different ways to enter the domain name.. and it ended up being all caps that worked.. and leaving off the .com that the domain name on the server said..

Yeah, you the ".com" should be left off on pre-Windows 2000 machines. The reason for the ".com" is because Active Directory uses DNS convention to resolve name that's why the DNS server is required if you want to enable Active Directory on your server.

Have you tried installing the DSClient on the Win98 machines? The client files can be found in the Win2k server CD.

no but i will look into that when i go back on friday.. i didnt have long to look at it.. and havent had much time at all on w2k server.. i have more of an NT server background..

thanks 🙂
