Networking Cable Modem

In a couple months, i'll be getting a cable modem. I am going to get the Linksys 4-port router and an 8-port switch to get all of my computers networked. My question is this: Does the cable modem plug directly into the router? Or will i have to put two network cards in one computer (one for the cable modem and one for the network)? The latter would mean that one computer would be the "server" and always have to be on. What i would like to do is plug the modem into the router so that i don't have to keep any computers on, but i'm not sure if it is possible. Anybody have any ideas?

Also, can anybody point me to some good cable modems. I've only seen one and i would like to get a couple options before i buy one.

I just answered my own question. The answer is YES. The cable modem can plug directly into the router. As far as cable modems, the only ones that i have found is the Linksys Cable Modem and the Motorola Cable Modem. Can anybody tell me which one is the best? Thanks!

I think the type of cable modem depends on your cable provider. They allow you to get your own, but they ask that you check with them first to make sure that the modem is compatible with their network. Toshiba and RCA also makes cable modems. Hope this helps. 🙂 😛 😉

We can rent cable modems for an extra ten bucks, but its not really worth it. I'd rather buy my own and then it will pay for itself in the long run. Thanks for the other two companies. i'll check those out tonight.

You have to think carefully about renting vs. buying issues.

If you buy a Modem for-$50 - $80, it make sense.

However if you have to pay more then $100, by the time you end up paying the Modem the next generation will be out, and your are back to square one. In addition if it brakes it is your responsibility.

That is very true. The Linksys modem is 100 bucks. If we save 10 bucks per month for not renting, it will be paid for in 10 months. So, i don't have any reservations about buying one over renting one. And the next generation will probably take forever to get to my area anyway. We just got DSL and cable is coming soon, which is slow compared to other areas.
