Networking at home

n00b here!

I have two computers at home on opposite ends of the house. I want to connect them and wanted to know the best wireless route to get it done. There are maybe three walls in between the two computers. I also have 2.4 Ghz cordless phones. Here are my concerns:

  • I know 802.11b & g run on 2.4 Ghz. To what degree will my cordless phones interfere with these two standards? And since they both run on 2.4 Ghz, would it be a better idea to look for a 802.11a wireless router?
  • Will the DL speed be THAT noticeable between b & g or only when I transfer files between computers?
  • I have a wired router already (cheapo SMC one). Should I upgrade to a wireless router or just get an access point to connect to the wired router? If so (I know this is personal preference), what brand should I get.

If you've already got a wired router, and it's working fine for you, then just get yourself an AP. If the machines aren't going to be moved, and you find that the range/speed isn't good enough, then you could get a directional antenna and point it towards the 2nd PC.

For DSL/cable, you probably won't reach the limit of even 11b, but if you will be transferring files between the computers regularly, then go for 11g, as the real-world speed will be 2-3 times more, which will be noticible when transferring files 🙂

As for whether your phones will intefere, you can always just try and see. Alternatively do a search and see if anyone has any problems with the same phones as you.
