Networking a PC and a MAC

I have a friend who wants to share some files on her mac over a network. The question is she doesn't exactly know how to do it. How do you share files with a mac?

She isn't having a problem with connecting to the PC's just the PC's to the Mac.


Also is there any network scanning software that will scan a large network by ip address for Macs? I have some for PC but dont know and for Macs.
 
Did she enable filesharing?
Did she attempt to connect?
Is she using the \\system-name\share-name stuff or that network neighborhood thing?

For scanning, doesn't everyone use nmap?
