yea so it's been ages since i have needed one of these, and i honestly cant remember how to get it done in vista. as far as i know everything is configured right, but i cant get the drive to show up when i go to my network places and check the computer it's shared on, and i cant access it via the "map network drive" option in vista. i need full access to a partition on the hard drive in my secondary computer so i can transcode files to it to sync to my 120gb ipod classic i just got, which i plan to sync via my secondary since it generally doesnt get taken apart as often as my primary, and it will be easier to organize my itunes library on a computer where i dont keep all my media lol.

so how do you do it exactly? I havent done it in over a year and i just cant get the damn thing to work. there must be a security setting im missing somewhere, and i have gone through so many processes on how to set it up i cant honestly detail what i have done so so far anymore (sorry). thx in advance, i have had this ipod 2 weeks without loading anything on it since my secondary was in pieces and i didnt have time to put it back together until now lol

Is the system visible from the Vista machine? If so, you should be able to open My Computer on the machine with the disk you want to share, right-click on the disk and share it.

I wish I knew what I was doing better, but networking makes me dizzy.

I have had good luck with the following:

on Vista, enable sharing and discovery

then create a new user, that will be used for logging into the machine, give that user admin powers

add that user to the share, make that user a co-owner, then add share

from the remote machine, find the share, and login with the new user created soley for networking...

the above is probably not right on some level, but it works for me with my mixed Mac/PC network...

1. From the Vista Start Orb select Control Panel
2. From the Control Panel left-click Network and Sharing Center
3. Select View network status and tasks
4. Under Sharing and Discovery click the drop down arrow. Here you will see the following options: - Turn on network discovery - Turn off network discovery
5. Click the radio button beside Turn on network discovery
6. This will prompt the User Account Control (UAC) to bring the "Windows needs your permission to continue..." window to come up. Click Continue.
7. Wait a moment for Vista to make the changes, and you should then be able to see other computers, devices, shared files and folders on your network.
