When I browse network neighborhood on 98se, I see both this machine and the xp one. When I try to add a network place in 'my network places' in xp, I can see the 98se computer which initially has a + sign to expand it. When I click on the 98se, nothing happens. The 'OK' stays greyed out so I cannot add this to network places. Also, when I do browse the 98se from the 98se Network Neighborhood, nothing is there.

Here's what I've done to get this far, a lot of which isn't necessary I'm sure.

The nics are set for 192.168.0.1 (98se) and 192.168.0.2 (xp)
The 98se machine is connected to the internet thru a sb4100 usb cable modem
I can ping both 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 from both computers.
I can connect to the xp from 98se using ultravnc.
Both the 98se and the xp have the same workgroup name
Both the 98se and the xp use the same logon name
I have installed netbeui on the 98se machine
I have setup home networking on both machines (ics)
If I use analogx proxy on the 98se, the xp machine can connect to the internet (albeit through limited protocols)
I have adjusted zonealarm pro so that nothing is blocked
The xp version is media center edition (sp2), no updates applied yet
The built-in firewall for xp has been turned off

The ultimate goal is to get internet access for the xp computer through internet connection sharing.

Thanks in advance

Great! Thanks, that enables me to view files on/from both machines. But I mistakingly thought that was why the xp machine couldn't access the internet. Any ideas on what I'm missing?

Have you set up the default gateway as 192.168.0.1 on the tcp/ip properties?
subnet mask 255.255.255.0?

I assigned the nic in the host computer as 192.168.0.1.

It turns out ICS was not turned on in the host computer as I thought. But when I went ahead and set it up, bad things happened. My zonealarm went nuts, there was no connection to the internet available, even uninstalling ICS didn't help. So I restored the partition image from a backup.

Is it possible ICS is assigning an address of 192.168.0.1 to the adapter it installs which would conflict with the nic's address? All I know is that the address of the motorola cable modem is 192.168.100.1.

AFAIK, the ICS machine and the other machines need to be in the same subnet, although I could be mistaken. Try setting the local private IP of the cablemodem to 192.168.0.100 instead, perhaps? Also, the free version of ZoneAlarm will NOT work with ICS, you need to be using the Pro version. Kerio 2.1.x will work with ICS, but you need to disable logging of packets to unopened ports, and enable "gateway mode". Btw, yes, ICS automatically will set the IP of the local LAN NIC on the ICS machine to 192.168.0.1. If you have a NIC already set to that, that could also cause a problem. I don't recall what happens in that case.

After installation of ICS on the 98 machine, things went fubar. Apparently something goes wrong with winsock2 when I install it. So I used winsock2 fix and everything is cool.

Thanks for your help folks.
