I am trying to network a pc that has windows 98 to a brand new laptop with XP. i had to install a network card in the pc, i hooked up the router. the internet is working on the pc, and the laptop is reading the signal from the router, says the signal is excellent, but the computers can't see each other on the network, and there is no internet on the laptop...is there a problem because on is 98 and one is xp? i named the workgroups the same, did the setup network on the laptop..but can't to it on the pc with 98...can someone help?

when i click on internet explorer on the laptop, says detecting proxy settings, then says can't find page. you think it's a problem with the laptop or something with windows 98 on the pc?

thanks

fix the laptop first...if it can't get on the web, then it's probably not on the network. Figure out what's wrong with it and go from there.

i ran all the setup wizards.....turned on/off firewall......shared folders...don't know what else to do on it!

There is No software relation necessary between the Win98 and XP. Ethernet is universal.

First, make sure that the Network is independently configured correctly on each computer. If you can surf the Internet it means that it is OK.

If you cannot surf, check the Network setting.

Once it works OK, take care in each computer of the Sharing.

This page might help with sharing, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall; Log to this page it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation - http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html
